Attribution & Disclaimers

This page sets out the attribution notices we are required to display for the third-party data sources used in our Output, and it contains the full safety and accuracy disclaimer that applies to all Output from the API and, when released, from the planned forecast and water-state API and the iOS and Android apps. Please read the safety disclaimer in full before relying on any value we return.

This page is general information about our data sources and the limits of our Output. It is not legal advice and does not by itself grant you any rights in the underlying data. Your use of the API is governed by our Terms of Service, and our handling of Personal Data is described in our Privacy Policy.

Critical safety and accuracy disclaimer

NOT FOR NAVIGATION OR SAFETY OF LIFE AT SEA.

The tide heights, tidal extremes, tidal datums and (when released) the marine forecast and water-state values we return, together with any derived figures, are modelled estimates provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE". They are computed from harmonic constants and numerical models, not measured at your location in real time. They are provided without any warranty of any kind, whether express, implied or statutory, including any implied warranty of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.

You must not use the Output as the sole or primary basis for navigation, vessel routing, anchoring, berthing, under-keel clearance, dredging, diving, offshore operations, search and rescue, flood response, or any other safety-critical or life-critical decision. The Output is not a substitute for official nautical charts, official tide tables, notices to mariners, or the products and services of a competent national hydrographic office or meteorological authority. Always consult official, authoritative sources and exercise your own professional judgement before taking any decision where life, safety, property or the environment may be at risk.

Tidal predictions describe the astronomical tide only. Real observed water levels are also affected by meteorological and oceanographic conditions, including storm surge, atmospheric pressure, wind set-up and set-down, river discharge, seiches and longer-term variability. As a result, real water levels can exceed the Highest Astronomical Tide (HAT) or fall below the Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT), sometimes by a significant margin, and actual high and low water can occur earlier or later than predicted.

Tidal datums and reference surfaces we compute (for example values referenced to HAT, LAT or mean sea level) are derived, non-official figures. They are not official Chart Datum and must not be treated as such, unless a specific value is explicitly sourced from, and labelled as originating from, a national hydrographic office. Where a value is not so labelled, you must assume it is a model-derived estimate and not an official reference surface. Computed datums are flagged `official: false` in the API response.

We do not warrant that the Output is accurate, error-free, continuous or available, and we accept no liability for decisions taken in reliance on it, to the maximum extent permitted by law. Liability is further addressed in our Terms of Service. Nothing in this disclaimer excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under Sweden or other applicable mandatory law.

Current sources (live: Tides, Waters and Heavens)

Three products are live today and served from the sources listed below: Tides (astronomical tide from the FES2022 model), Waters (the marine forecast and water-state) and Heavens (global weather). Lands is not yet released; its planned sources are marked accordingly. The complete, always-current per-product source list is available programmatically at GET /v1/attribution (see "Machine-readable attribution" below).

Our tides API computes tidal heights and extremes from the FES2022 global ocean tide model. As required by the AVISO licence under which we use this product, we display the following attribution:

The FES2022 Tide product was funded by CNES, produced by LEGOS, NOVELTIS and CLS and made freely available by AVISO.

Generated using AVISO+ Products.

We do not redistribute the FES2022 source grid. Our Output consists of values we synthesise from the model's harmonic constants and is a derivative work for the purposes of the AVISO licence.

Data sources we use or will use

The list below sets out the upstream data sources used across our live products (Tides, Waters and Heavens) and those we expect to use in our planned Lands product and future tidal-datum enrichment. Sources marked as planned are not yet reflected in API responses; when a source is part of a given response, its required credit is included in that response's `meta.attribution` and in GET /v1/attribution (see "Machine-readable attribution" below). Each source carries its own licence terms and required credit, which we reproduce here. Where a source imposes an obligation beyond a bare credit (for example the Copernicus Marine acknowledgement and its record-keeping duty, or the GEBCO not-for-navigation notice), you must honour that obligation too when you display or redistribute our Output.

Ocean tide model (live)

  • AVISO / FES2022 (CNES, LEGOS, NOVELTIS, CLS). Marine forecast and weather sources (Waters and Heavens - live)

  • NOAA (US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). US Government work, in the public domain (GFS, GFS-Wave, RTOFS, HRRR, OISST, NDBC buoys and US IOOS HF-radar). Condition: no endorsement - use of NOAA data does not imply any endorsement by NOAA, the US Department of Commerce or the US Government, and we do not state or imply any such endorsement. NOAA data is provided as-is with no warranty.
  • ECMWF Open Data. Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY-4.0). Condition: credit ECMWF as the source and indicate that changes have been made. Our Output is derived from and processed on top of ECMWF data.
  • Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). DWD ICON model data provided under the German GeoNutzV licence (also offered under CC-BY-4.0). Because every value we serve is a blend/interpolation, we display the modified-data form: *"Data basis: Deutscher Wetterdienst, gridded model data, own elements added."*
  • Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). HRDPS model data under the ECCC Data Servers End-use Licence. Credit: *"Data Source: Environment and Climate Change Canada."*
  • Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS). Wave models (global MFWAM plus the Baltic, Black Sea, IBI and Mediterranean regional models) and the OSTIA SST analysis. Credit: *"Generated using E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information"* together with the relevant product DOIs. Important reseller obligation: the Copernicus Marine licence requires this acknowledgement, and a duty to keep records tracing use, to be passed on to anyone you redistribute the derived data to. If you build on our Waters Output you must carry this credit and pass the same obligation to your own users.
  • Astronomy Engine. Sunrise, sunset and moon phase shown on the Heavens page are computed with Astronomy Engine (MIT licence, (c) Don Cross); these are astronomy calculations, not forecast data.

Bathymetry and seafloor sources (Waters - live)

  • GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans). GEBCO 2024 grid, free with attribution: *"GEBCO Compilation Group (2024) GEBCO_2024 Grid (doi:10.5285/1c44ce99-0a0d-5f4f-e063-7086abc0ea0f)."* Condition: GEBCO bathymetry is NOT FOR NAVIGATION and must not be used for navigational purposes; see the safety disclaimer above.
  • EMODnet (European Marine Observation and Data Network). EMODnet Bathymetry DTM 2024, licensed CC-BY-4.0; attribution to the EMODnet Bathymetry Consortium required. Not for navigation.

Habitat and imagery sources (planned)

  • Allen Coral Atlas. Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY-4.0); attribution to the Allen Coral Atlas required.
  • Sentinel-2. Copernicus Sentinel data; attribution to Copernicus required (for example, "contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data").

Tide-gauge and datum sources (planned)

  • NOAA CO-OPS (Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services). US Government work, in the public domain; no endorsement implied (see NOAA condition above).
  • SHOM RAM (Service Hydrographique et Oceanographique de la Marine, Reseau d'Annales des Marees). Provided under the Etalab Open Licence 2.0. Credit: *"Shom, [year]. RAM"*, where [year] is the year of the dataset used.
  • Kartverket (Norwegian Mapping Authority). Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY-4.0); attribution to Kartverket required.

Planned future sources not yet in responses

  • X-TRACK / CTOH (Center for Topographic studies of the Ocean and Hydrosphere) along-track tidal constants. This source is planned and is not yet reflected in any API response. When X-TRACK-derived data is used in a response, we will display the additional CTOH attribution required by the AVISO/CTOH licence, alongside the FES2022 credit above, at that time.

Where a source requires that modifications be indicated, you should assume our Output has been processed, transformed and combined with other inputs, and is a derived product rather than the original source data. The licence terms of each upstream source remain with that source; nothing on this page transfers any right in the underlying data to you beyond your use of our Output under our Terms of Service.

Machine-readable attribution

The attribution that applies to a given response is also available programmatically, so you can surface the required credits in your own application:

  • GET /v1/attribution returns the required source credits for every live product (Tides, Waters and Heavens), grouped per product, plus the full source list with each source's licence, exact credit string, DOI and conditions. It is public and does not require an API Key. Add `?include=planned` to also see the planned Lands sources.
  • Every keyed data response includes a `meta.attribution` field carrying the credit strings that apply to the product served, so you can surface them directly in your app.

If you display, redistribute or build on our Output, you must reproduce the attribution provided in `meta.attribution` and via GET /v1/attribution for the sources used, and you must comply with the corresponding upstream licence conditions set out above. This requirement is part of your obligations under our Terms of Service.
